Of course if you are in the process of building your marine tank, there will be no dilemma, as marine live rock will be one of the basic staples of your aquarium and making a purchase will be already in your plans. However if you have an established saltwater aquarium then finding live rock for sale will be a golden opportunity to consider if your live rock needs renewing or adding to. The crucial need for marine live rock in your aquarium cannot be stressed too highly, and that is why a sale of live rock should never be ignored.
You might like to check where it is from, of course, and how that affects quality. Which geographical region it is from provokes much debate amongst marine aquarists, some swear by rock from the sea around Fuji and the pacific islands, others prefer that which is found on the Caribbean sea bed. The more porous the rock the better it is, as it will house micro-organisms, and good bacteria that will breathe and cycle your tank water, cleansing and disposing of waste, and balancing the water’s elemental composition for your fish. This base rock, which is cheaper, is still useful as you can use it beneath live rock to fill the bottom of the tank. As long as you place live rock over it, it will eventually absorb the living organisms from above, become marine live rock and your biological nitrification and filter system is created at half the price. It is always worth considering what you place on your marine live rock to make it more decorous and inspiring, as well as more protective of the inhabitants of your marine tank. Do they like hiding beneath the precipices of the rock and watching other fish, do they like swimming through plants and round objects or do they want some extra places where they will feel safe?
